π Today marks the start of the National Year of Reading 2026, a nationwide celebration of the joy of reading. With support from the government, the National Literacy Trust, the Premier League and many others, the campaign is encouraging everyone to Go All In and make time to read about the things they love.
π Recent figures show only one in four young people aged 8 to 18 said they enjoy reading in their free time. Teenage boys are the least likely to enjoy reading, with just 25% saying they like reading, compared to 39% of girls.
π€² Reading for pleasure can make a real difference. It helps children and young people build confidence, supports their wellbeing, improves educational outcomes, and opens up new opportunities in life.
π Here in Bassetlaw, weβre lucky to have some wonderful champions for reading for pleasure. One shining example is Wonderland Bookshop in Retford, which was recently named Childrenβs Bookseller of the Year at the British Book Awards. I was really pleased to visit last year and put forward an Early Day Motion in Parliament to call for further measures to help every child discover the joy of books.
π« I welcome the Government's 'Libraries for Primaries' scheme which will see every Primary School in England provided with a school library.
π The National Literacy Trust is hoping to recruit 100,000 volunteers to support the campaign, like organising a book event or helping adults to read for the first time. You can find more information in the link below.

I met with the government Education Minister, Georgia Gould who has responsibility for SEND provision, and I took the opportunity to talk to her about the experiences that parents have spoken to me about in Bassetlaw and the good practice and support that I have seen in some of our local schools.
The White Paper on SEND will be coming out shortly - there will be a public consultation and I will be making sure that local parents and schools have their say.

The Government have set up a new traffic light system, with red, amber, green ratings to let the public see which local highways authorities are fixing potholes effectively.
I welcome the governmentβs annoucement at the last budget that a record Β£7.3 billion fund will be available to help councils get on with fixing nationβs roads.
Our East Midlands Labour Mayor, Claire Ward wants to make sure that Nottinghamshire gets it's fair share. Last year, this saw a 40% huge uplift in money to repair oads, with our county allocated nearly Β£8.3m.
However, it's down to the Reform-led County Council to decide how and where that money is spent. They can even decide to shift this money to other "priorities".
Pot hole dodging remains a serious problem in Bassetlaw. Are we getting the repairs we desperately need?
